What You’ll Need to Purchase When Buying a Macbook

So you’ve decided to purchase an Apple laptop? You’re not alone: more people are switching to Macs every year. Unfortunately, MacBooks are more expensive than their PC counterparts. They also come with a lot of separate purchases that you may not have budgeted for. Here’s what you should you consider purchasing along with your MacBook.

  1. The Microsoft Office suite for Macs. I’m getting an Apple, you say. What do I want with Microsoft? Well, unless you’re using free open-source software such as OpenOffice, you’ll need the Microsoft package– especially if you’re a professional taking online courses. Brace yourself: the software package is pretty pricey. The OpenOffice.org suite works just as well, but you may find it frustrating to switch from what you already know. Some business circles may also consider OpenOffice’s offerings to be unprofessional. Google Docs is another free alternative.
  2. A case. If you’re dropping severe cash just to get your MacBook, you don’t want to destroy it in the first week, do you? Choose a case that will protect your computer from bumps, bruises, or accidental drops (yes, they do happen). Be sure to also choose a case that’s easily portable, especially if you’re a college student lugging around books or a professional transporting files along with your laptop.
  3. A wireless mouse. You may not need a wireless mouse since your MacBook comes with a trackpad (don’t forget that you can customize each side of your trackpad, meaning you can turn the right side of your trackpad into a right mouse button), but they’re incredibly useful to have.

Becoming an Internet Security Expert

It seems that everyday we hear about a new virus or form of malware making its way around the Internet. Unfortunately, many of these can find their way onto our computing platforms to wreak havoc. In addition, we have heard about many crimes such as identity theft that occur as well.

Due to this increasing level of risk, as well as the increase of ecommerce and shopping sites, the need for internet security experts has risen. There is now an overwhelming need for consultants and professionals that can provide expert services to protect users from these threats.

Following are some ways you can become a security expert in the internet arena.

Many schools are offering specialized programs, as well as online education degrees for many different fields including that of internet security specialist. This is due to the increased need for security and computer professionals.

Look for reputable, accredited schools and programs before beginning your education. Make sure that you will be receiving a legitimate certificate or degree. Unfortunately there have been many instances where schools have give students course that are not recognized.

Once you have obtained your degree or certification, you can now enter the field in many applications. There are experts who work for consulting firms that examine their client’s vulnerabilities. They then provide services such as firewall implementation and virus protection. Other internet security professionals can work on network and software issues. Experts can also be involved in such high-level operations such as homeland and military security.

No matter which are you choose to enter, you can be assured that you will be helping end users stay safe on the Internet.

Taking Care of Minor Issues Yourself

Lots of people wish they could be computer programmers. While they may desire the large paychecks and the ability to create something that could possibly change the world, computer programming requires a serious amount of discipline and tons of practice to get good at. Most people just don’t have what it takes to do such a challenging profession.

However, you don’t have to be a computer programmer to take care of some basic issues by yourself. With just a few classes you can tend to most of the basic issues you’ll face when you own a computer, and you won’t have to haul it into a shop just to have it be taken care of by a professional. With a few online courses, you can actually become very good at things like computer repair or more software related topics. The idea isn’t to turn you into a full on computer tech. The idea is to be more self-reliant and to save some money when something goes wrong.

The best part of being able to deal with minor computer issues by yourself is that you won’t have to trust it to someone else. How do you like going all over town to have a professional tend to something you should be able to deal with all by yourself? Nobody likes doing that. When you have the basic skills to take care of most issues, you don’t have to deal with letting someone else do it for you.

Shortcuts to Making a Computer Great

Upgrading a computer is not always something that can be done. The cost and time involved might simply be too much. So instead, consider taking some time for short cuts and making the system you have now work better than ever. There are some programs available online, for free, that will clean up hard drives, registries, and viruses. There are also software upgrades that are free that help optimize the running capacity of your machine.

Finding More Shortcuts

Some of the best shortcuts is in the form of simply cleaning up old files. For most computers, they begin to slow down after they have been used for a while, not because they are old and tired, but because they are full. Defragment your computer regularly to keep these files in order and to maintain a good processing speed.

Many people notice that after completing a large task like a project or obtaining online education degrees, that there is a lot of unnecessary information stored. By getting rid of that, the computer will begin to work like new again, and fast.

Defragmenting simply combines like files together on the hard drive, but not moving them from their original files. Think of it as folding laundry. You are making the clothes stacked neater, and in groups, but not removing anything. There are computers that are still functioning that are a decade old. If you take care of your computer early on, and keep things organized, then your computer will take care of you.

The Paralegal 1-2-3

As technology continues to change and grow, there is not a career field that has not been effected. While many who take online courses to study for a paralegal degree focus on the legal aspects of the field, the most qualified have taken the time to study computers, hardware, and software. This skill set, combined with the all important soft skills, will help to create a highly marketable person who is likely to succeed in the paralegal field.

When you stop to consider how much computers have changed our world, it makes sense to spend at least some of your time studying the field. For example, one technological hardware improvement has changed the way that paralegals do the task of court reporting. Once, the court reported used short-hand and later transcribed it into a typewritten official transcription. Today a computer software program completes the transcription for the paralegal. Obviously, understanding the every changing field of technology will have an impact on your marketability. Be sure to include some computer online courses during your studies.

When you have completed your classwork, you should have a powerful trifecta of skills. The first will be the legal knowledge and ability to do simple legal tasks. The second will be soft skills such as communication skills and diligence. Finally, the technology part will allow you to stay marketable long after you finish your online courses.

The paralegal field is an exciting field and one that will remain a practical career choice for years, especially when combined with basic computer knowledge.

Keep Your Computer Safe From VIruses

Each day that we access the Internet, we are faced with the possibilities of encountering virus or other malicious code that can negatively influence our computing platforms. Users should take measures that will help make sure that we can avoid virus and other such nastiness on the Internet.

Whether you are taking online courses or just surfing the ‘Net, here are a few ways you can protect yourself from viruses.

Use antivirus applications. These applications are the first line of defense against virus attacks. These programs scan and search your computer for viruses. The viruses are then removed. The programs use a database or list of known viruses, so it is important that your antivirus programs are consistently updated. The list needs to be updated so that your program can recognize new threats. Antivirus programs are available on both a paid and free basis, so there is no reason not to have one installed on all of your computing devices.

Firewalls. Firewalls are also extremely effective in the area of virus protection. Antivirus programs scan and identify viruses, where firewalls are used to actually block bad code from reaching your computer. Because firewalls cannot always differentiate between safe data and bad code, you may need to be more proactive. The firewall may ask if you want to allow access to certain sites or programs. You can create lists of sites that you do deem safe, so you don’t have to repeat the same processes over and over again.

Finally, use common sense. While the majority of sites on the Internet are safe, there are many that are not. If you don’t trust a website, don’t access it.

Choosing the Right Apple Computer

Apple computers are expensive so it’s important to choose the right computer for you. Don’t think about what other people are buying and choose the one that’s going to fit your needs and skills.

Desktop Vs. MacBook

The first decision is which type of computer you want to get. Do you want the desktop, known as the iMac, or a laptop known as the MacBook or MacBook Pro? Desktops tend to have a much larger hard drive and you get the larger screen. The MacBook is more suited for students taking online courses or those who need something portable to take to work or when traveling.

Computer Usage

What are you using the computer for? If you’re someone who likes to play video games then you will need graphic cards as well as a lot more RAM than regular MAC users. The MacBook Pro will be your best option. If you are looking for a good computer to listen to music, watch movies and do homework then the MacBook or iMac will be your best option.

Also think about your hard drive space. If you enjoy downloading media from iTunes you’ll need a decent size hard drive so that you can safely store your music on there.

When buying MAC computers there a lot of things to think about. Everybody is looking for something different in a computer and when you spend a lot of a MAC you want it to fit your needs. If you’re unsure about the type of MAC you can always go to your local MAC store and test out the computers to see which one you like the best.

Using Technology in the Classroom

Computers are becoming inundated in our lives. There is hardly a household in the United States that does not have a computer because they are cheap and relevant. People rely on computers for communication and information and hardly anyone could bear to live without these.

In fact, recently a news crew went around asking people how much they would have to be paid in order to never use the Internet for the rest of their lives. Many said there wasn’t enough money; others said a billion dollars. Can you imagine going the rest of your life not using email or searching online for information you need? Nowadays, you can even earn online education degrees in order to teach in schools.

Because our lives are so closely tied to computers, it’s more important than ever for our children to learn to use them at a young age, especially for those few children who do not have access to computers at home and have a distinct disadvantage in that area. In order for children to get the opportunity to learn how to use technology, it needs to be made available to students. Of course, this requires money, and most schools are low on funds.

As a society, we can help schools by donating money for this very purpose. If you own a technology company, you could also donate your products to be used by students. If neither of those is possible, then consider volunteering your time to speak with companies about donating money or products to the local school.
