So you’ve decided to purchase an Apple laptop? You’re not alone: more people are switching to Macs every year. Unfortunately, MacBooks are more expensive than their PC counterparts. They also come with a lot of separate purchases that you may not have budgeted for. Here’s what you should you consider purchasing along with your MacBook.

  1. The Microsoft Office suite for Macs. I’m getting an Apple, you say. What do I want with Microsoft? Well, unless you’re using free open-source software such as OpenOffice, you’ll need the Microsoft package– especially if you’re a professional taking online courses. Brace yourself: the software package is pretty pricey. The OpenOffice.org suite works just as well, but you may find it frustrating to switch from what you already know. Some business circles may also consider OpenOffice’s offerings to be unprofessional. Google Docs is another free alternative.
  2. A case. If you’re dropping severe cash just to get your MacBook, you don’t want to destroy it in the first week, do you? Choose a case that will protect your computer from bumps, bruises, or accidental drops (yes, they do happen). Apple computers are expensive so it’s important to choose the right computer for you. Don’t think about what other people are buying and choose the one that’s going to fit your needs and skills.

Desktop Vs. MacBook

The first decision is which type of computer you want to get. Do you want the desktop, known as the iMac, or a laptop known as the MacBook or MacBook Pro? Desktops tend to have a much larger hard drive and you get the larger screen. The MacBook is more suited for students taking online courses or those who need something portable to take to work or when traveling.

Computer Usage

What are you using the computer for? If you’re someone who likes to play video games then you will need graphic cards as well as a lot more RAM than regular MAC users. The MacBook Pro will be your best option. If you are looking for a good computer to listen to music, watch movies and do homework then the MacBook or iMac will be your best option.

Also think about your hard drive space. If you enjoy downloading media from iTunes you’ll need a decent size hard drive so that you can safely store your music on there.

When buying MAC computers there a lot of things to think about. Everybody is looking for something different in a computer and when you spend a lot of a MAC you want it to fit your needs. If you’re unsure about the type of MAC you can always go to your local MAC store and test out the computers to see which one you like the best.

Using Technology in the Classroom

Computers are becoming inundated in our lives. There is hardly a household in the United States that does not have a computer because they are cheap and relevant. People rely on computers for communication and information and hardly anyone could bear to live without these.

In fact, recently a news crew went around asking people how much they would have to be paid in order to never use the Internet for the rest of their lives. Many said there wasn’t enough money; others said a billion dollars. Can you imagine going the rest of your life not using email or searching online for information you need? Nowadays, you can even earn online education degrees in order to teach in schools.

Because our lives are so closely tied to computers, it’s more important than ever for our children to learn to use them at a young age, especially for those few children who do not have access to computers at home and have a distinct disadvantage in that area. In order for children to get the opportunity to learn how to use technology, it needs to be made available to students. Of course, this requires money, and most schools are low on funds.

As a society, we can help schools by donating money for this very purpose. If you own a technology company, you could also donate your products to be used by students. If neither of those is possible, then consider volunteering your time to speak with companies about donating money or products to the local school.
