How To Use Social Networking Sites Productively

Most all of us are guilty of spending too much time on social networking sites.  Much like spending time online shopping day and night for designer jewelry, books or clothes, they can be quite addicting to some people who feel the need to be up-to-date on all their friends’ lives.  When you are attending school or trying to find a job, this can make you lose your focus quickly.  However, you can learn to be productive while using a social networking site.

Use the networking sites to form school groups for your classes.  This allows you and other students to connect with each other, discuss ideas and assignments.  This is a good tool for people who are enrolled in college online.  People you may never have the chance to meet face-to-face; you can meet on networking sites.  You can also use YouTube or Skype to interact with your classmates.

Joining a site like LinkedIn, that focuses more on professional groups, will allow insight on your chosen profession and allow you to interact with people in that profession.  When you are searching for a job and marketing yourself this may be the best tool to sell yourself and meet influential people.  It is also a good way to stay up to date with that job field.

There are times when you need to just study.  That means keeping the computer turned off and getting down to business.  You want your time online to be productive so limit your time spent on social networking sites by allotting 10 or 15 minutes to scroll through and catch up and then log out.
