Apple’s second generation iPad, the iPad 2, has something old and something new to offer consumers when it comes to features. Variety is high. It has 18 versions, including a 16, 32 and 64 GB models, and a WiFi only version. These variations parallel the original iPad. Models with GSM and CDMA are on tap with the same storage capacity. True to style form, each variation will come in more than one color, black and white. The cost in the U.S. ranges from $499 to $829.

The iPad 2 is more compact and weighs less than the original model, shedding 33% of its former weight. While the design is more svelte, the iPad 2 has a more sturdy design, making it more comfortable for one handed operation. Design features include a more streamlined screen bezel that aligns with the sleek feel of the iPod Touch. The new Smart Cover is a magnetic clasp system with auto-lock/unlock capabilities.

However, current iPad owners may not want to ditch their first generation model for the second generation. The newer iPad 2 lacks a mini Display Port, Thunderbolt and SD slot. The iPad 2 can poach customers from competitors with its ultra swift A5 dual-core processor, cameras and HDMI.

New features include FaceTime, Photo Booth, and cameras. FaceTime enables full-screen video calling and its UI is similar to the iPhone. Users can call another Mac or iOS device. Photo Booth is a self photo feature that use realtime filters.  Consensus is that the Photo Booth app operates as well on iPad as on OS X. The cameras enable full-screen photographs from the rear or front of the camera, and video recording with either using different resolutions. However, the camera feature, compared to a pocket device, is not as appealing as video chat.

The iPad 2 screen mirroring, activated as a default,  lets users display all of its 9.7″ screen contents on an HDMI port-equipped HDTV using an accessory Digital AV Adapter. The adapter allows movie displays of 720p, and other content up to 1080p HD.
